A Little Help for a Lady

Some time ago I visited New York City. Nothing stands out more in my memory than what I saw in New York Harbor. There she was, standing 302 feet above the water and weighing 225 tons - the Statue of Liberty. In her left hand she held a tablet on which was inscribed: The Fourth of July, 1776. But what really awed me was her massive right arm that's twelve foot in width as it held a torch high above her head like a light to the rest of the world. A light flooded my soul, in spite of the darkness that had descended upon this great city and on our own country because of 9/11. A sense of pride and hope overwhelmed me - just a little of what those first persons sailing into the harbor must have felt when they first saw Lady Liberty. And I began to think about what a great country this is - all the things that make her great. I realized for all her problems, she was still the greatest nation on earth and that I could live no place else.

Then I thought about the story of a man who once took his granddaughter with him on a visit to New York City. They rode the ferry out to see the Statue of Liberty. The little girl was awed by the sight of the great arm holding up that huge lamp. On the return boat to Manhattan she kept looking back at the statue. That night when she could not sleep her grandfather asked if something was troubling her. "I keep thinking of the lady with the lamp," she said. "Don't you think somebody ought to help her hold it up?"

Yes, her arm is getting weary these days. Yes, we can help her by…

Saying a prayer every now and then for our country and our leaders…rather than just making complaints...

Protecting and preserving our natural resources…like our oceans...

Not waiting for the government to do everything for us, but taking initiative to do what we can to make our country and world a better place to live for ourselves and the generations to come…

Exercising our rights, like voting, for which so many have fought and died…

Lifting the load of someone we meet in need…

Being patient, kind, and courteous when we are behind the wheel and in everything else we do…

Volunteering our time at a local adult day care, hospital, school, homeless shelter, and anywhere else we might be needed…

Working for liberty and justice for all people everywhere and in every way we can…helping that light to shine in all dark places...

Daily giving thanks for the privilege and the responsibilities of living in a nation God has so richly blessed…

I see and hear this message everywhere: GOD BLESS AMERICA. Did you ever stop to think that this is a prayer God is waiting to answer through you and me? How can you and I best help answer that prayer this day? How can we this day reach up and give Lady Liberty a little hand holding up that light?

Three men were hiking through a forest when they came upon a large raging, violent river. Needing to get to the other side, the first man prayed: 'God, please give me the strength to cross the river.'
Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across in about 2 hours, having almost drowned twice.
After witnessing that, the second man prayed: 'God, please give me strength and the tools to cross the river'
Poof! God gave him a rowboat and strong arms and strong legs and he was able to row across in about an hour after almost capsizing once.
Seeing what happened to the first two men, the third man prayed: 'God, please give me the strength, the tools and the intelligence to cross the river'
Poof! He was turned into a woman. She checked the map, hiked one hundred yards up stream and walked across the bridge.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

* For protecting them by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
* For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
* For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
* For depriving us in many cases of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
* For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
* For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
* For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
* For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms. Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren.

* We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us.
* We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here.
* We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.

They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by the authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare.

That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.

Missed last week with my trip to Norfolk for the Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. You can see on little comment on my time there below.

Last Tuesday, I sat in Norfolk Scope for our Virginia Annual Conference meeting. As a part of our morning session, we had worship. This is how the Daily News describes it –

“The audience prepared for worship with Vance Ross that is featuring Voices of Youth, celebrating 25 years of ministry.

Ross read Scripture from Acts. In the text they see how people acted after the Spirit moved them. He spoke on "Awesome-Building." He talked about attending conferences in churches, colleges, smaller venues. And now he's at the Norfolk Scope, an "awesome building." After the Holy Spirit visited, different people lived together, spoke together, held all things in common. "Nobody was cut out because they didn't go to Duke or Candler or Wesley, Iliff, Boston," Ross said. "They built people, they built a movement. They built what we are."

What is does not report is that Rev. Ross – a member of the Baltimore/Washington Conference and serves as Deputy General Secretary of the General Board of Discipleship – went on to tell us that the 1st c. church in Jerusalem did not discriminate based on a person’s sexual orientation. You may ask, “What proof did he offer?” This is it – “IT’S NOT IN THERE THAT THEY DID!”

For the record, I did not listen to the rest of the sermon… I got up and walked out. But I did talk to folks who stayed and he did not offer any other proof.

Now, back to last Tuesday, here is the problem I have with the statements made by Rev. Ross: this is an argument from negative evidence ( similar to the Argument From Ignorance, also known by its Latin name argumentum ad ignorantiam, is the fallacy of assuming something is false if not proven to be true. )

This is my favorite example of the argument from negative evidence – the disciples and Jesus never went to the bathroom. How do I know? “It can’t be found in the Gospels!”

I can make a strong argument that the Early Church in Jerusalem cared about the sexual orientation of its Jewish membership. Just look at what happens when the Jewish-Christian Paul runs into incest and homosexuality in the Corinthian Church. He does not tell them to embrace the Roman culture – rather he encourages them to flee from it.

I believe that Rev. Ross should be more careful in what he tells a few thousand folks in Virginia, but it also made me look at what I had told my congregation. This Summer I am preaching on the Power given to the Church following the Pentecost Experience in Acts 2. Two weeks ago I was preaching on the Healing Power manifest in the healing of the lame man in Acts 3. I mentioned that many commentaries make much of this man not going to them for healing – but I made a case for this man going to God over and over again in his 40 years of life. And I also made a case for his family and friends interceding on his behalf over and over again.

Did I make the same mistake? I think not because daily and weekly prayer times in Jewish homes included prayer for the sick. They prayed for God to heal – they prayed to Jehovah Rapha to touch those who were in need. Do I have proof they prayed for the man who got up and leaped? (btw – if that man leaped, his healing was complete) No, but it is a very safe assumption that God answered prayers for healing then; even as He does today.

I missed sending out anything for Father’s Day last week, but here it is (just a little late)…
Father's Day was nearing when I brought my three-year-old son, Tyler, to the card store. Inside, I showed him all the cards to choose for Dad and asked him to pick one.
When I looked back, I saw Tyler picking up card after card, opening it up and immediately putting it back in the rack.
"Tyler, what are you doing?" I asked. "Can't you find a card for Daddy?"
"No," he replied, "I'm looking for one with money in it."

How Fathers Were Created

When the good Lord was creating fathers, He started with a tall frame. A female angel nearby said, "What kind of father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping. And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child-size, who would children have to look up to?"

And when God made a father's hands, they were large and sinewy. The angel shook her head sadly and said, "Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on ponytails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats." And God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day, yet small enough to cup a child's face."

And then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders. The angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do you realize you just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?" And God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."

God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer. "That's not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?" And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross or scare off mice at the summer cabin or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill."

God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words but a firm, authoritive voice and eyes that saw everything but remained calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the angel and said, "Now, are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?"

The angel shutteth up.

The Rev. Billy Graham tells of a time early in his career when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was.

God's Voice
Not long ago I heard a story about a young man and an old preacher. The young man had lost his job and didn't know which way to turn. So he went to see the old preacher.
Pacing about the preacher's study, the young man ranted about his problem. Finally he clenched his fist and shouted, "I've begged God to say something to help me, preacher, why doesn't God answer?"
The old preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply, something so hushed it was indistinguishable. The young man stepped across the room. "What did you say?" he asked. The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the young man moved closer until he was leaning on the preacher's chair.
"Sorry," he said. "I still didn't hear you." With their heads bent together, the old preacher spoke once more. "God sometimes whispers," he said, "So we will move closer to hear him." This time the young man heard and he understood.
We all want God's voice to thunder through the air with the answer to our problem. But God's is the still; small voice... the gentle whisper. Perhaps there's a reason.
Nothing draws human focus quite like a whisper. God's whisper means I must stop my ranting and move close to Him, until my head is bent together with His. And then, as I listen, I will find my answer.
Better still, I find myself closer to God. And there is no better place to be .......Amen?

If the devil were to write his beatitudes, they would probably go something like this:
1. Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour once a week with their fellow Christians - they save me the effort of trying to keep them from God's blessings.
2. Blessed are those Christians who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked - its pretty easy to keep them from working for God.
3. Blessed are the touchy who stop going to church - they are my missionaries.
4. Blessed are the trouble makers - they shall be called my children.
5. Blessed are the complainers - I'm all ears for them.
6. Blessed are those who are bored with the minister's mannerisms and mistakes - for they get nothing out of his sermons.
7. Blessed is the church member who expects to be invited to his own church - for he is a part of the problem instead of the solution.
8. Blessed are those who gossip - for they shall cause strife and division - that pleases me.
9. Blessed are those who are easily offended - for they will soon get angry and quit.
10. Blessed are those who do not give their offering to carry on God's work - for they are my helpers.
11. Blessed is he who professes to love God but hates his brother and sister - for they shall be with me forever.

Prayer Encounter Workshop
Saturday June 12, 2010
Virginia Beach, Va.

The Evangelical Fellowship of the Virginia, in cooperation with Foundry United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is offering a Prayer Encounter Workshop on Saturday, June 12, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The registration fee for the Workshop is $30 per person and includes a box lunch, continental breakfast, and snacks. Each participant may reserve an optional workbook at a cost of $15.00 each. Make checks payable to Foundry United Methodist Church (put "Prayer Encounter" on the memo) and mail to Foundry UMC, 2801 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23452

The purpose of the Prayer Encounter Workshop is to enhance an individual's prayer life and to resource a congregation's prayer ministries. The presenter will be The Rev. Dr. Terry Teykl. Terry's passion for prayer is contagious as he communicates foundational principles and practical ides. He'll make you laugh, but you will come away from the experience convinced that you can make a difference in your church, your life, and the lives of those who are yet to find faith in Christ.

Terry's warm humorous style makes him a sought after speaker and seminar leader. He pastored for 28 years and is now devoted full-time in prayer ministry. He has authored many books on prayer including Making Room To Pray, Pray the Price, Your Pastor - Preyed On or Prayed For, How To Pray After You've Kicked The Dog, Acts 29, Blueprint For The House Of Prayer, and The Presence Based Church. Terry is an ordained Elder in the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
The deadline for registration is Monday, June 7. Walk-in registrations will be accepted but lunch is not guaranteed. .5 CEU is available with preregistration notification.

One Sunday after church a mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, “Don't be scared; you'll get your quilt.”

O God, I thank you that I have come so far this day without giving offense or hurting another. I thank you that my addictions have not taken over my life this day. I believe it is a fundamental mistake to assume any of us are immune to demons and their influences. When I recently had some battles with them, this information was very, very helpful in exercising authority over them. (The e-book’s message is just as potent for the writer as it is for the reader.)

We have not published this book in paper form due to lack of finances, but it has received rave reviews from those who have downloaded it. Along with its strength of teaching the basics of deliverance and showing how to be free from pesky demons, it also has a lot of links and references to other works from my peers in the International Society of Deliverance Ministers.
